Fuel Up After School Club
During the 2019-2020 school year, several third graders were selected throughout the school year to participate in a fitness squad called, “Fuel Up Fitness”. They were selected to be student leaders to help promote health and fitness throughout our school. They were selected based on their positive energy and participation in physical education. We believe in the power of student leaders to help make a difference for a healthier and happier future. This wonderful opportunity helped the students develop leadership and communication skills that would benefit them for a lifetime. They created posters, participated in Workout Wednesdays on the morning announcements, and participated in a brief meeting twice a month to discuss new ideas.
Students that were a part of the "Fuel Up Fitness Squad" hosted a fitness dance for the school on the morning announcements to share dance moves for a healthy heart.
Healthy Minds and Bodies
During the 2019-2020 school year, we created an after-school program called Healthy Bodies and Minds. This program was designed to build positive lifelong physical fitness habits. We recognized that kids are not as active as they should be. They need daily vigorous physical activity to build strength, endurance, healthy muscles and bones or they may face problems like obesity, diabetes, and lower self-esteem. This program was created to help students develop the skills, knowledge, and desire for not only being physically active, but also for their health and wellness. This program took place once a week during the months of January and February from 2:45-4:00 p.m.. Each week the students were engaged with different themes/topics, which included; hip-hop, healthy eating, fitness circuits, working together, sport stacking challenges, kindness, and dance party. The program and students were very receptive and it made a huge impact on their love and desire for health and fitness.

Kids Heart Challenge
Students at Willards Elementary School participated in the Kids Heart Challenge during the 2019-2020 school year. Kids Heart Challenge is a service-learning program that teaches children the importance of heart healthy habits, share inspirational stories of children who have been touched by heart disease, and help raise life saving funds for the American Heart Association. Students at Willards Elementary exceeded our goal and raised over $9,000 for the American Heart Association and celebrated their success with an event held in the gymnasium with various stations such as dancing, jump roping, basketball, an obstacle course, a water station, hula-hooping, and many more.
