3.1.1 School Active In Community
During the 2020-2021 school year all school based community outreach was put on hold due to the global pandemic. In the future, students at Willards Elementary School will continue to participate in community outreach programs and the education of the green initiatives.
3.1.2 Community Active In The School
Matthew Hurd - Maryland Department of Natural Resources (Project Forester): Mr. Hurd is a parent of a 3rd grade student. In 2019 Mr. Hurd provided a school-wide assembly involving Smokey Bear to educate students about the dangers of unplanned human-caused wildfires to our environment. Mr. Hurd is an available resource and shares his expertise with other students.
Aurelio Giannitti - Ward Museum (Green Center): Mr. Giannitti has been an excellent resource with field trips, available grants and providing professional development for our teachers, in addition to assisting Willards staff with green school initiatives.
Salisbury Zoo (LEAF Program) - Each year, students in 3rd grade take a trip to the Salisbury Zoo. The LEAF program focuses on local forests, their animals, uses, ecology, and threats. Students also participate in lessons about endangered species and even make recycled paper. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Salisbury Zoo held a virtual field trip for students.
